The Verdict

Lightyear has had an ISA ‘in the pipeline’ for 3 years now and I hope it appears soon as its absence is letting down an otherwise very decent offering.

Struggling to decide what to invest in? This is where Lightyear really shine. Their level of research into the various assets will whet the appetite of even seasoned investors. In-app earnings calls are a unique proposition here, and analyst estimates and price targets are all free to access. Want to know how many analysts recommend you buy, hold or sell? It’s all available within the app.

Assets are limited to stocks and ETFs, however, this is ample for many investors. Fees are low, withdrawals are fast, and there are multicurrency accounts available so you can keep costs to a minimum. The addition of fractional shares means investors can also own a piece of big-value stocks without the hefty price tag.

Only having one account available for private investors is the Achilles heel here. But if you aren’t looking for a tax wrapper, this platform could be a good proposition.

Who do I recommend Lightyear for?

For investors with little to no experience, this is a good option. The ETFs are very cheap to access and they represent a good way to diversify your portfolio in the stock market.

However, this is also a good option for those who would like to dabble in individual stocks but don’t really know where to start. The analyst ratings will provide a guide and there is a great amount of research. However, the lack of education could result in a portfolio that lacks diversification and the complete lack of ISA or pension account can’t be overlooked.

Accounts

This is really limited. No ISA, no SIPP, no junior accounts, just one general investment account and a business account. However, Lightyear has been claiming to have an ISA in the pipeline for three years now so this could rectified soon.
