The Verdict
Average Success Rate
BestInvest 5-Year Avg The following dataset includes the performances of ready-made portfolios/funds offered by investment platforms and may include both actively and passively managed ready-made portfolios/funds. Performance indicated is also net of all fees to 31st January 2024, unless stated otherwise; any tiered fee structure will be disclosed. Ready-made portfolios/funds that include cryptocurrencies or any other securities outside cash and equities are not included in the dataset. The dataset only includes ready-made portfolios/funds which are explicitly advertised by their respective platforms as being for ‘beginners’, and which are exclusively offered by the platform itself. Funds which are managed by other providers and may be identically offered across multiple platforms were not included in this dataset. For example, the Vanguard UK All Share Acc. ETF was offered by Plum, but as it is not directly managed by Plum and customers could reasonably access it on multiple platforms, it was not included for the purposes of this research. Other discretely advertised securities or investments are not included.

Bestinvest does really well on the number of different accounts it offers. Alongside the usual

A junior self-invested personal pension (SIPP) is a way of investing money for your child’s future retirement, free from capital gains and dividend tax. As it is designed to be started before a child turns 18, it must be opened by a parent or guardian although anyone can contribute. You get slightly less choice when it comes to assets though. Bestinvest offers around 3,700 different investable assets, including UK and US shares, funds, ETFs, and investment trusts - not a massively wide choice. But it also offers 19

Bestinvest offers low trading fees - some of the lowest among the mainstream platforms. Its platform fee is higher than some others but it’s competitive for ready-made portfolios and US shares. If you plan to regularly trade US stocks or funds, Bestinvest could represent good value for money as US shares and funds incur no trading fees. However, watch out for the foreign exchange fee, as it’s a rather pricey 0.95%, making those US stocks not quite as free as they might initially sound.
A real plus point with Bestinvest is the free investment coaching which is available to all customers. All of Bestinvest’s coaches are qualified financial planners and, yep, their time and insights really are available for free for as many sessions as you require. That’s a service that’s not offered by many of Bestinvest’s competitors, although it isn't a direct equivalent to independent financial advice. That's because BestIvest's financial planners are only able to provide information on BestInvest products and services, and, disappointingly, it isn't personalised advice so there are no recommendations on what you should invest in for example.
A few other things niggled for me: It takes far too long for requests to buy and sell funds to be processed, and there’s not enough automation of some processes, meaning it all takes too long and requires customer service intervention for things to happen. When competitors allow me to self-manage my actions with no delays, it frustrated me that I can’t do the same here.

We don't yet have a full 5 years' data for all Bestinvest's ready-made portfolios, but we do have data for some of them, and unfortunately, they are currently falling behind the industry average. We also have full sets of data for shorter time periods and Bestinvest portfolios are, unfortunately, falling behind there too.
