BUDGET 2025: Budget leaks branded ‘unacceptable’

Chief secretary to the prime minister Darren Jones has blasted leaks ahead of today’s Autumn Budget.

This Budget has seen an unprecedented amount of speculation in the lead up to the event, not helped by the fact the government scheduled it as late as possible in the year.

But Mr Jones said the repeated leaks to newspapers in real-time, before any policies had been confirmed, has “not been helpful”.

He told LBC Radio today: “There have been some leaks which are unacceptable and not very helpful.

“We’ve had to read the riot act to people in Government about that.”

Leaks ahead of the Budget last year around pension tax-free lump sums saw a surge in people taking tax-free cash from their pensions, with many later regretting it and attempting to return it, data from the financial watchdog shows.

This year, the housing market has stalled as homebuyers and sellers have held off making decisions to see what is announced in the event.

Our view

It can be stressful reading masses of speculation in the press. The best thing you can do is ignore the noise, but be prepared to jump into action if anything is announced. Remember that most policies announced don’t come into effect immediately, as they will need to either go through consultation, or will need to be implemented by the sectors involved.
