BUDGET 2025: Government freezes rail fares for one year

Page Content

The government has confirmed it will freeze rail fares for one year in a bid to help with the cost of living crisis. It marks the first freeze in 30 years.

The Treasury said: “The move will save commuters hundreds of pounds off their season tickets, freeze costs for travellers, and support growth in town centres across the country. Commuters on the more expensive routes will save more than £300 per year.”

Our view

Any freeze on price increases is good news and should be celebrated, as railways are expensive to run and the government will be shouldering those extra costs.

But it’s worth bearing in mind that UK rail fares are among the most expensive in Europe, with a typical peak single fare between cities costing twice as much as a comparable fare in other countries in the EU.

Our expensive prices deter people from travelling by train and leave many areas reliant on cars.

Long-term, the government needs to invest much more heavily in our railways to promote growth across the country.
