How to claim a council tax reduction

Thousands of people could be eligible for help with their council tax bill.

If you are on a low income and are entitled to certain benefits, like Universal Credit, you may be able to claim a discount of up to 100%.

Other circumstances could qualify you for a smaller discount.

However, the discount depends on where you live, as each council sets its own rules. It also depends on:

• your circumstances (for example, your income, the number of children you have, what benefits you claim and your residency status)
• your household income – this includes savings, pensions and your partner’s income
• if your children or any other adults live with you

Some of the main discounts on offer include:

Single person discount

You can get a 35% council tax reduction if you live on your own, or if others in your house are ‘disregarded’, such as children under 18 or other young people in full time education.

Contact your local council to let them know you are a single person household.

Low-income households discount

You can get a reduction to your council tax bill if you are on a low income and receive benefits. The support is normally means-tested, so can vary.

For example, you may get a one-off discount, or may be able to spread your payments over a longer period of time.

Pensioners’ discount

Pensioners on certain benefits like Pension Credit may be able to get up to 100% off their council tax bill.

You’ll need the Guaranteed Element of the benefit to get this, although you may qualify for some form of help if you don’t.

Other pensioners living alone can claim the usual 25% discount.
