Daily Briefing: Pensioners Warned Over £300 Payment Scam As Winter Fuel Changes And City Break Tax Loom

Three money stories are making headlines today, and each one could affect how much cash lands in your pocket over the coming months.

A genuine £300 payment and the scam copying it

State pensioners should keep an eye on their post over the coming weeks. The Department for Work and Pensions is sending out letters confirming an automatic £300 payment due to land in October. There’s no application process — if you’re eligible, the money simply arrives.

That very fact, however, makes it a prime target for fraudsters. Because the payment is genuine and automatic, scammers are expected to mimic it closely. Anyone receiving a text or email urging them to click a link or hand over bank details to “unlock” the payment should treat it as fake. The DWP does not ask for personal or banking information this way,  so delete the message and do not engage with it.

Four groups losing the Winter Fuel Payment this year

For anyone who relies on help with heating costs,  or supports someone who does, there’s less welcome news. The DWP has confirmed four groups of people who will not receive the Winter Fuel Payment this year.

Those potentially affected are being urged to check their status now, rather than discovering the shortfall in December when the heating bill arrives without the payment to help cover it.

Tourist tax could hit UK city breaks

Finally, anyone planning a UK staycation may want to budget a little extra. The government is granting regional mayors in England the power to introduce a tourist tax on hotel, bed and breakfast, and Airbnb stays.

Supporters argue the tax will raise much-needed funds for local services, while the hospitality industry has warned it could cost jobs and deter bookings. For travellers, the practical upshot is straightforward: the price of that room could rise, depending on which city you’re staying in.

What it means for you

To sum up: pensioners have a genuine payment to watch for — and a scam to watch out for. Some people are about to lose a payment they may have been relying on. And your next UK break could cost a little more than expected.

Which one affects you most, the pension payment, the Winter Fuel Payment change, or the staycation tax?

I’m Antonia Medlicott, founder of Investing Insiders – a financial education platform helping everyday savers and investors make sense of their money.

My journey into finance wasn’t traditional. I started out watching friends and colleagues struggle to understand their pensions, savings, and investment options. The jargon, the hidden fees, the lack of clear guidance – it all made personal finance feel like a closed club. So over ten years ago, I decided to change that.

Since then, I’ve spent my career breaking down the financial world into plain English. I believe good money management isn’t about being rich; it’s about being in control and understanding your choices. Through Investing Insiders, I show people how to build healthy financial habits, make confident investing decisions, and get the most out of their pensions and ISAs.

Today, my work reaches thousands through the website, newsletter, and social channels. You might have seen me quoted in The Times, The Guardian, or City A.M., where I share insights on saving, investing, and how to make your pension work harder.

On TikTok, Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram, I bring those same lessons to life – cutting through jargon with clear, practical tips that make finance feel simple and actionable.

At Investing Insiders, my goal is simple: to help you make smarter, more confident decisions with your money – without the noise, jargon, or sales spin.
